Anandiben Patel: She Will Be Gujarat's First Woman Chief Minister

 Gujarat revenue minister Anandiben Patel, 72, will replace Narendra Modi as the chief minister of Gujarat. She will also become the first women chief minister of Gujarat, and is certain to have a tough time adhering to the governance standards set by her predecessor. Born in Kharod village in North Gujarat, Anandiben is the longest serving BJP minister in the state. Considered a tough politician, the former school principal was enrolled in the only school in her village, which also happened to be an all-boys school. She finally went on to do her masters in science and got a gold medal while pursuing Masters in Education. She came in contact with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or the RSS, and its political affiliate, the BJP, through her husband Mafatbhai Patel and it was in 1987 that she formally joined the BJP. Three days ahead of the crucial poll results, the outgoing Congress-led UPA-II government on Tuesday cleared the proposal to appoint Lt. General Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next army chief. Incumbent Army chief General Bikram Singh's tenure ends on July 31. A day after defence minister AK Antony recommended Lt General Suhag's name for the top post, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by the prime minister Manmohan Singh formally approved the appointment. Antony-led defence ministry initiated the process to appoint next army chief a month back, but the process got delayed after the Opposition BJP and former army chief General VK Singh accused the government of taking decision in 'undue haste'. The BJP even approached the Election Commission to stall the government's move. But on Monday, the poll panel gave its go-ahead for the appointment.
