IPL matches to be broadcast live on Youtube

The IPL's 2010 season will be broadcast live on YouTube, following an arrangement between the league and Google, owners of the internet channel. The deal - under which all 60 games will be shown live or on a short delay on a dedicated YouTube channel - will apply across the world, except in the USA, which will have re-broadcast options. The agreement gives Google exclusive online rights for IPL content for two years, with both parties sharing revenues from sponsorships and advertising. The press release does not specify whether the service will be on a subscription basis - content on YouTube is largely free to watch - but Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, indicated in a media interview that it would be free. The most significant aspect of the deal is the amount of control it gives the viewers, who will be able to customise their viewing experience by choosing between different camera angles. Additionally they will be able to freeze, fast-forward and rewind the feed, as well as

New version Firefox 3.6: I am more than my Monkey

The last time Mozilla released a new incarnation of its open-source Firefox browser, the main concern was the JavaScript engine. This time around, the open-sourcers have far more on the brain. Due as early as next week, Firefox 3.6 hardly ignores JavaScript performance. Mozilla claims a full 20 per cent boost on the SunSpider benchmark. But the new Firefox also seeks to juice performance beyond JavaScript and - perhaps more importantly - expand the arsenal of tools packed into the browser proper. "This is really a different type of release for us," Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox development, tells The Reg. "Firefox 3.6 is going back to that idea of trying to get a bunch of new web technology into the hands of users so that web developers can take advantage of it sooner." According to Beltzner, this was the original intention when Mozilla began work on Firefox 3.1 - the project that would eventually morph into Firefox 3.5 before making its official

Mozilla Joins Microsoft in Slamming Google Chrome Frame

This is a surprise. Mozilla has slammed Chrome Frame, the Google plugin that fixes Internet Explorer by providing the Chrome browser engine within the IE interface. Google decided that it was easier to create an IE plugin than make their new HTML5 applications backward-compatible with IE6, IE7 and IE8. Mitchell Baker, chairman of the Mozilla Foundation and former Mozilla CEO questioned the decision for the plugin: " The overall effects of Chrome Frame are undesirable. I predict positive results will not be enduring and — and to the extent it is adopted — Chrome Frame will end in growing fragmentation and loss of control for most of us, including Web developers. But Chrome Frame’s biggest problem is that it cedes control to the site, not the person surfing. And that will just confuse users. Once your browser has fragmented into multiple rendering engines, it’s very hard to manage information across Web sites. Some information will be manageable from the browser you use a

"We need to hear now from the Chinese," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said. "We are anxious to hear from them. I think Google will keep us apprised on their next steps as it relates to China as well," he said. "We will be issuing a formal demarche to the Chinese Government in Beijing on this issue in the coming days, probably early next week," the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, P J Crowley, said.
